Do Air Purifiers Remove Pollen Effectively? Choose the Right Purifier

Pollen is the delicate powder plants produce during their reproductive cycles. It is composed of tiny, dust-like grains that carry the male genetic material plants use to fertilize. This pollen usually comes from trees, grass, weeds, and flowers and is mainly carried through the air by wind, insects, or animals for plant fertilization. The following are the familiar sources of pollen:

  • Trees: Oak, pine, birch, cedar, and maple are the more common trees that produce pollen and shed in the spring.
  • Grasses: Ryegrass, Bermuda grass, Timothy grass, and Kentucky bluegrass frequently shed pollen, usually in late spring and early summer.
  • Weeds: Ragweed, sagebrush, pigweed, and lamb's quarters produce pollen and are common in late summer and fall.

Common Allergies Caused by Pollen

Pollen allergies, hay fever, or allergic rhinitis are allergic reactions triggered by the inhalation of pollen grains. The different types of pollen may cause allergic reactions in sensitive people. The significant types of pollen allergies are the following:

  • Tree pollen allergy: The allergy results from the pollen of trees like oak, birch, and cedar. It usually occurs during early spring.
  • Grass pollen allergy: This is usually due to the pollen of ryegrass, Bermuda grass, and other grasses and can occur during late spring and summer.
  • Weed pollen allergy: This is the most common cause of allergies during late summer and fall. The pollen from ragweed and other weeds is responsible.

Symptoms of Pollen Allergies

Pollen allergies can induce a lot of symptoms, which can range from mild to severe. Some of the most usual symptoms include:

  • Sneezing: Frequent and uncontrollable sneezing is one of the landmarks of pollen allergies.

Activated Carbon Filters

Activated carbon filters are primarily used for air purification to remove odors and volatile organic compounds from the air. While they do not capture pollen, they can complement HEPA filters in air purifiers by removing gaseous pollutants that aggravate allergy symptoms. Nevertheless, activated carbon screens do not remove pollen particles independently from the air.

UV Light Purifiers

The UV light filters use ultraviolet light to kill or inactivate pathogens in the air, such as bacteria, viruses, and mold spores of all types. The air filter using UV light may be able to sterilize the air, but it does not remove the particles like pollen. There are some air cleaners available that integrate both UV light and HEPA screens to make the indoor air healthier for breathing in more ways. The UV light kills the harmful microbes, while the HEPA filter collects the pollen and other minute particles.


An ionizer releases negative ions into the air, which then attach themselves to the objects in the air, including pollen. The charged particles then cling to each other and gain enough mass to fall to the ground or get stuck on the collection plate, usually within the ionizer. While an ionizer can be used to decrease the pollen particle count in the air, its effectiveness sometimes relies on the design and efficiency of the device. Another thing is that an ionizer sometimes generates ozone, which is harmful to your health when it reaches excessive levels.

Type and Quality of Filter

The type and quality of the filter are the most important things when it comes to finding an air cleaner that will remove pollen.
